CVS Black Friday Starts Today!

This week is always my favorite at CVS!

Check out the ad today to see 19 items that you can get for FREE after extrabucks rewards!  This means that you buy the item and get the amount of the item back printed on your receipt as rewards to use on your next purchase.  I spent mine on a transaction immediately following this one on breathe right strips and nasal spray.

Check out my previous post about shopping at CVS here:
Pay attention to the limits per household.  Each item can only be redeemed for extrabucks once, except for the canned food, which has a limit of 2.

This ad is good for the next 4 days!  Last year, CVS ran a second sale starting on Black Friday with a whole new set of offers.  Hopefully that will happen this year too!

Happy savings, and enjoy your free scavenger hunt around CVS.  I know I did!  :)

Freebies!

Today's Staples ad has a coupon for a free 12'x5'x5.5' mailing box!  We get two papers, and the coupon specifies that it is good for one box per person, not household.  So my husband and I each used a coupon to get two total.

If you have a CVS card (they are free and really awesome), swipe it at their magic red box at the front of the store and it will print out a coupon for a free roll of CVS paper towels.  This offer is good this whole week.

Also...today is my birthday and it's been a great one!  My sister is in town, which means lots of laughing and lots of help with the little one.  I have also been taking advantage of some freebies and you all know how much I LOVE free!   I ate a free sub from Firehouse subs, had a free entree at First Watch last weekend, have a free beverage offer on my Starbucks card, a free pastry on my Panera card, a $3 coupon emailed from CVS, and free windshield wiper blades from Mazda.

Look into birthday offers in your area the month before your birthday so you can take advantage of some freebies as well!

Holiday Grocery Shopping

I cannot believe that the holiday season is upon us!  As we plan to enjoy family time and all of the magic that accompanies the months of November and December, let's also get super excited about the possibilities of savings that occur at this time.  Grocery stores want you to do your holiday meal shopping with them, which means they will compete to have the best advertised deals on holiday meal staples.  This turns into amazing deal opportunities.  Here are my tips for successful and stress free holiday grocery shopping:

Tip 1.  Shop the sale and not before.  The sale will start the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hanukah, so wait to shop for those meals until then!  My daughter was still in the mightfreakoutintheshoppingcart phase last year so I shopped for non perishables weeks beforehand at Target to get it over with.  I thought I was saving money because they had 5% off cartwheel offers on everything I needed.  The next week, most of those items were BOGO at Publix.  Lesson learned!  I will be waiting this year, unless I see what I know is an incredible deal before that.

Tip 2. Plan!  Plan your meals now!  Have a list of all the ingredients and kitchen items you need to purchase on hand.  Add to the list when you think of something you forgot to write down instead of having to get it at a convenience store last minute, at three times the cost it would have been at a grocery store.  A little planning will go along way, believe me!

Tip 3.  Collect your coupons now.  Remember that while stores will compete for your business, so will companies and brands.  You will see all kinds of coupons for canned vegetables, cookie dough, dinner rolls, etc., so keep your eyes open for the best deals and match them with coupons to save even more!

4.  Stockpile if you can.  Finally, think about your stockpile when you shop for your holiday meals.  If something that you use year round is available now at an amazing price, grab extra.  I love having canned pumpkin year round for random pumpkin pancakes, but I don't love paying for it out of season, so I always get extra in November. :)

I'll post the very best Thanksgiving and Christmas grocery deals that I snag for myself when it happens, so stay tuned!

Holiday Gift Shopping: Creating and Sticking to Your Budget

It's my favorite time of year!!  The holidays are the season of giving and spending time with family and friends...but sometimes they can turn into times of stress and spending too much money.  Here are my tips for a successful and practical holiday gift giving season:

1.  Come up with a total budget you plan to spend on gifts.  This budget should be reasonable and NOT a stress on your life and/or and bank account.  Remember, this is the season of giving, not debt.

2.  Write down exactly what you want to give to each person on your list.  Try to be as specific as possible.  This means "miter saw" instead of "power tools" and "puzzles, blocks, and books" instead of "toys."

 3.  Split your total budget into individual dollar amounts and list those amounts next to each person.

4.   Revise your list and budget.  Miter saws don't cost $10, and you don't need to spend $200 on your 6 month old nephew who will enjoy unwrapping the present more than playing with what's inside.  Move the dollar amounts around to make sense for what you plan to give, but do NOT increase your budget.  You came up with this dollar amount because it works for you and your family, so don't change your mind now!

5.  Research and investigate.  This is the best part!  I look at this step as a game, and last year I started it back in July (but not this year, unfortunately).  Find out what stores in your area or online carry the gift you are looking for and compare prices.  You could buy the one with the lowest price and stop there.  Since you are a savvy shopper, you will probably want to investigate a little more.  Look into store incentives that will be offered during the holidays.  A lot of times a store will sneak their Black Friday prices weeks before the sale, so check for those online.  Also look into coupons, dollars back for spending a certain amount, and shipping costs, if you are buying online.  Many online retailers will offer free shipping and super low prices the Monday after Black Friday, so keep that in mind.

6.  Keep your receipts, get gift receipts, and ask about return policies.  It's possible you will find a better price before you give your gift, so keep researching after you have made your purchase.  Return the pricey one and buy the new one at a lower price.

7.  Track your spending and reassess your budget.  How did you do?  Be proud if you stuck to your guns and didn't go over budget.  Were you under budget?  Awesome!  You spent time finding thoughtful and useful gifts that your friends and family will love, and you didn't break the bank to do so.  What will you do with that hypothetical cash that you didn't spend?  I recommend saving it, of course, or adding it to next year's holiday budget.

That's it for today, but stay tuned!  I'll post more about specific store and gift deals as well as outside-the-box gift ideas that won't break the bank.

Happy Saving!

Target's Daily Toy Deals

Target is offering 50% off a specific toy on cartwheel every day until Christmas Eve this year!

If you haven't yet used Cartwheel and you shop at Target, you're missing out!  It's a free app that allows you to add offers to your account from your phone.  Ask the cashier to scan your barcode from your phone at checkout and your savings will be deducted from your total. The best part about Cartwheel is it's used in addition to any other savings you have, including manufacture coupons, Target coupons, Target mobile coupons, and sales.  I recommend scanning the items in your cart with your phone right before checking out to see if they qualify for any cartwheel offers.  I've saved a LOT just by taking a few minutes to do this every time I go to Target, and I've also gotten items for free or better this way.

So, open the app, click on "collections" then "hot deals for kids" and the first item on the list should be the toy that is offered at 50% off using cartwheel.  It's a one day offer, and the toys go fast!  Today's is a Minnie Mouse toy that would have cost $9 after cartwheel...but my store was all out when I checked at 1pm.  Oh well!  If you have the Target toy booklet from the newspaper, there is a 25% off one toy coupon that you can combine with the 50% off offer.  :)

Target Halloween Clearance Finds!

Target has some Halloween merchandise on sale for 90% off!  I paid $2.67 total for these animal toys and a pumpkin carving kit for next year.  My pets don't mind if their toys are season appropriate...and neither do I!  There was also a ton of candy at my store, but we don't need anymore in this house.  :)  Share your clearance finds!

How I Saved $630 on My Cable Bill!

Blogging about savings has pushed me even further to hold myself accountable for my own spending.  It's been a pleasant surprise, in that my goal was to help others!  So, in this quest to help others save money for their families, I have been working on my own budget and have been thinking of new ways to cut costs.  I admit that while I have the grocery savings down to a science that works for me, our household bills are pretty high.  I'm pretending our last electric bill was some fluke and that we will be reimbursed for the mistake, but I know we should have turned out more lights and invested in a proper doggie door.  But, I digress.  I managed to save $630 dollars this year on our cable/internet/cell phone bill and I cannot wait any longer to tell you how I did it and how you can save too!!!  Here is my advice:

Call your cable, internet, and phone providers right now and ask them what can be done to lower your current bill.  Seriously.  Drop everything and do it right now.

I did it yesterday.  Fifteen minutes later, I cancelled my premium channels (we barely watched them anyway), and added on another gig or megabyte or whatever it's called of data onto the phone plan, and lowered my bill by $50 per month.  I then asked if there were any other discounts or promotions happening, and she credited my account a one time amount of $30.  That's $630 I will save this year after making a 15 minute phone call.  Please do this yourself!  Right now!  Some things to consider:

1.  Lowering your package.  Do you need all the channels or unlimited texting, etc. that you are signed up for right now?  If not, ditch them.  You may have signed up for a premium package at a low cost for a trial period, but if that period is up, you could be getting charged a very high amount now.  If you find that you miss what you give up, simply call back and get them back.  They won't object.

2.  Switching providers.  Companies compete for new customers and offer very low rates for the first year of service.  Some will even buy out your existing contracts to get you on board.  Also, when you call to cancel your current service, your former service will sometimes lower the cost of your subscription considerably just to keep you as a customer.

3.  Canceling your cable completely.  I know, scary, but there are other options out there.  Netflix and Hulu subscriptions are a fraction of what the premium channels cost.  RedBox movies are $1 per day.  DVDs from the library are free.  Plus...you might not miss it.  My friend cancelled her cable for the summer just to save money and ended up going without it for a whole year and a half.  She saved $1,080 dollars for her family!  Think about what you could do with that kind of savings.

4.  Asking about any current promotions or discounts available right now.  If you like the service, if you always pay your bill, remind them of if.  They should appreciate your business and may do something for you.

If you have other ways to save on cable, internet, or cell phone plans, please let me know by commenting below!  I would love to hear from you!  I would also LOVE to hear from anyone who calls and saves after reading this.  I'm already on a high from yesterday's phone call, so knowing this helped someone else will just tip me over the edge.  :)

CVS: How to save BIG at my favorite drugstore!

I love shopping at CVS!  I think you will too once I show you how easy it is to save a LOT of money by going there every few weeks with a handful of coupons and a plan.  :)

Extrabucks
CVS prints what they call extrabucks on your receipt after qualifying purchases.  These extrabucks can be used on future purchases as cash, and usually expire a month after they are printed.  The purchases that qualify for extrabucks are located in the weekly circular ads.

Here is an example of an extrabucks deal:
Buy one Colgate Optic White toothpaste @$2.99, get $2 back in extrabucks rewards.

It's like getting it for $.99!

Use a coupon on top of an extrabucks deal and save even more!  This is a great way to make your purchase free or a moneymaker.

The Magical Red Machine
Also known as the extra care center, this nifty box at the front of the store allows you to scan your CVS card and watch store coupons print before your eyes.  Some of the offers print for everyone, but it also generates coupons that are personalized to you, based on prior purchases.  I've seen coupons for free items print monthly just by shopping at CVS for deals.  Here you will get % off one regular priced item coupons as well as bonus extrabucks that are earned every quarter just for shopping at CVS.

Redeeming your Bucks
Tip #1:  Use your extrabucks wisely!  I sometimes use them immediately afterwards in a second transaction so I don't have to worry about saving them for later.  If not, I will save those bucks to use the next time a deal like this comes around, which will be in a week or two.  The only time you cannot use extrabucks is to get the same exact deal a second time.  So, you cannot buy another Colgate toothpaste using the extrabucks that printed for the first one and expect bucks to print again.  Pay attention to the limits listed on each deal in the ad, and at the bottom of your receipt.  Extrabucks only print when you scan your CVS card at checkout, and the system keeps track of how many eligible purchases you have left.

Tip #2:  Use your extrabucks for items that are a good price or on sale only!  It wouldn't make sense to get free toothbrushes and then use those extrabucks on $5 toothpaste.

What to Buy at CVS
I purchase 90% of our toothbrushes and toothpaste from CVS, usually for free, or $.99 a piece.  CVS also has good sales on hair care, cereal, vitamins, makeup (I haven't checked out the Beauty Rewards Program yet, but I've heard it saves a great deal of money on beautification products) laundry detergent, and cold/allergy medicine.

Happy savings at CVS and beyond!

Stockpiling

What is it?
It can be daunting and overwhelming to see pictures of extreme stockpiles, so don't go looking for them!  I don't have a grocery store in my basement (or a basement at all!), and I don't foresee the need to be prepared for the zombie apocalypse (yet) but I still technically "stockpile."  So if it's not hoarding, what is stockpiling?

Have you ever purchased your favorite cereal on sale, maybe half off, and gotten two boxes instead of one? It probably felt pretty good to have twice as much cereal as you normally get at the same price that you usually pay for one.  But...what happened the next time you had to buy that same cereal?  It probably wasn't on sale this time and I bet you wondered why you didn't get more of those half off boxes last time.  Was it because buying 6-8 boxes of cereal just didn't feel right?  It's time to change your thinking!  It is right, if it saves your family money, and if you are actually going to use it.

The concept of stockpiling is very simple.  Stockpiling is buying enough of an item at a rock bottom price to last you until you can get it again at another rock bottom or "stock up" price.

Why Should I Stockpile?
Here's a scenario taken from my shopping trip today:

I bought 6 boxes of Raisin Bran Crunch (my husband's favorite) for $4.79 each.  Without following sales and using coupons, I would have spent $28.74.  It wouldn't have been gone all at once, but the money would have been spent over the course of the next month in weekly shopping trips. This week, the cereal is on sale for buy one, get one free AND I have 2 $1/3 manufacture coupons to use as well.  My total?  $12.37 for 6 boxes.  That's $2.07 per box, or a savings of 57%!

The time I spent looking for the coupons and paying attention to the sale (which was minimal) in order to save $16.37 was so worth it.  And that's just one example of one item, one week!

Think about how much YOU can save for your family by stockpiling.

How do I Begin?
First of all, start to pay attention to prices of products you use all the time.  If you have a favorite cereal, take note of what it costs normally, how often you see coupons for it, and how frequently it goes on sale at your store.  I promise, if you pay attention, you will start to notice the patterns in which sales on your favorite items occur.  That being said, lots of products seem to be on a 3 month sale cycle.

Okay, a product I use is "on sale."  How do I know if I should stock up?

Be weary!  Many stores, especially drug stores, will advertise in their ad that items are on sale, but it still might not be a good price!  I stock up on grocery items when I can get something more than half off, or when I know that the price is the lowest I've seen.

Ruth from LivingWellSpendingLess.com has an awesome rock bottom price list that I used as a guideline when I started to shop for savings.  She shops at the same stores I do, namely Publix, CVS, and Target, and she also lives in Florida.  You should look for other rock bottom or "stock up" lists from your area if you are outside Florida.  Ruth also has an entire section on her website devoted to beginner couponing, which helped and inspired me to really focus on saving.  I highly recommend checking it out.

That's really all there is to it!  Buy items at the lowest price you can, add coupons to save even more, and get enough to last you until you can get them at that price again.  It's worth it, I promise.  As an added bonus, you will probably last a little longer during the zombie apocalypse, with all the cereal and toilet paper you will have on hand.

Happy Savings!

50% off pillow covers at Hobby Lobby!

Does anyone else hate spending money on throw pillows?  They're decorative.  They serve no purpose other than to look nice and provide a resting place for my animals (when I'm not watching).  I've been looking to get different pillows for the living room for a while, but the prices haven't been right.  I saw one for $50.  Offensive.  Anyway, I got two of these pillow covers today at Hobby Lobby for half off $7.99 each.  I cut the existing covers off my old ones and zipped these on.  Easier, cheaper, and less time consuming than sewing my own!  Oh, and they're washable.  There are many more colors, styles, and sizes, at a variety of prices.  If you miss this sale, Hobby Lobby always has 40% off one regular priced item mobile coupons available for smart phones or to print at home.

The total came to $8.46 for the pair.  What do you think?

Publix: Seven Ways to Save!

Today I will highlight seven ways you can maximize your savings at Publix!  I hope you learn a thing or two, and tell me about the great deals you find the next time you shop. :)

1.  BOGO sales:  Publix lists many items as buy one, get one free, every week.  This means that you can use coupons on the item you are buying AND the item you are getting for free.  For example, if Dial body wash is normally $3.83, but is on sale as BOGO this week, use 2 $2/1 manufacture coupons (NLA, sorry!), and get them both for free!

2.  Digital coupons:  Download the Publix app on your smartphone and choose manufacture coupons to be attached to your phone number.  Type your phone number into the keypad before paying, and watch your total drop!  Publix recently announced that they will begin to customize their digital coupons to individual users.  I haven't seen it yet, but supposedly you will see coupon offers based off what you buy.

3.  Store coupons:  Found in green and purple flyers in the Sunday paper and located in the kiosks in store.  If you don't see them in the kiosks, ask customer service for one.    Publix accepts one manufacture coupon AND one store coupon per item/offer.  Combining store coupons with manufacture coupons on items that are on sale is my favorite way to get the absolute best deal on grocery items!

 4.  Competitor coupons:  Look for signage in the store or ask an employee to tell you which competitor coupons are accepted at your Publix.  Mine takes Winn Dixie, Whole Foods, and Target.  These coupons work exactly as store coupons, and can be combined with manufacture coupons!

5. Missed coupons:  If you left some coupons at home, bring your receipt back later or the next day, and customer service will reimburse you.

6.  Rain checks:
If an on sale item is out of stock, Publix will write you a rain check so you can take advantage of the sale even after it ends.

7.
Baby Club and  Publix Paws:  Sign up for these free savings clubs online or in the store.  I still get baby club coupons 19 months after having my baby!

I also appreciate the free cookie and ballon for kids, excellent customer service, and online deli ordering at Publix.  :). Check out their official Publix coupon policy, as well as a picture of my mom and daughter enjoying a shopping trip:  :)

Come back for breakdowns of my own shopping trips so you can get the same deals I do.  Maybe I'll throw in a video tutorial now and then... :)

9.21.14 Part II: Clearance Target table and shampoo!

Did I mention in the last post that the TABLE in the picture was part of the $21 total?  It was, and we got it at Target!  Here is the breakdown:

Target:

Buy 6 Herbal Essence shampoo/conditioners.
Use 3 BOGO manufacture coupons from SS 9/14 (smart source insert).

4 were $2.50 each and 2 were $2.99 each.

To use the $5/$20 hair care purchase mobile coupon or newspaper coupon from this week's Target add, we had to spend another $4.02 before coupons.  We got hairspray that Ivy needed at $3.99 and it worked even though we were $.03 off.

The table was an impulse buy from the clearance section in the back of the store.  It originally cost $49.99.  It was 70% off for $14.98, and we scanned a 20% off cartwheel offer on my phone, making the table a whopping $11.98!  Here is a picture of the table in it's new home in Ivy's apartment:

She bought some shoes for $19.99, used the Target redcard to save an additional 5%, and paid $33.10 for it all!  :)  We (I) felt like coupon rock stars after that haul.  Happy savings!

9.21: All of this for less than $21! Part 1: CVS!!

My amazing sister Ivy agreed to let me find deals for her!  She has a pretty busy work schedule and isn't able to clip and plan like I can, so I buy stuff that I know she uses at a super low price, and she pays me what I spend.  It's win win because I LOVE finding deals, but I only have so much space in my house for it all.  And seeing her face when I tell her that she only owes me under $21 for all this is pretty rewarding.  :)  So how did I do it?  How can YOU do it?  The breakdown for my CVS purchase is below.  Check back for additional posts about the Target and Publix purchases from the photo.  :)

CVS:

Transaction #1:

Loreal Paris shampoo and conditioner is on sale for 2/$9, get $5 back in extrabucks rewards when you buy 2.

Buy 2, use 1 $4/2 from RP (RedPlum coupon insert booklet) from 9/14.
Pay $5, get back $5 in extrabucks.
This makes each bottle FREE!

Starbucks Refresher Drink is $1.50, get $1.50 back in extrabucks rewards.
Use $1/1 printable:  $1.00/1Starbucks Refreshers Beverage, 12 oz (starbucksrefreshers.com)
Use 20% off one full price item email coupon (tell the cashier you want to use it when you send it to your card or print it from your email).
Pay $.20, get $1.50 back in rewards.  You technically made $1.30!  Complete your transaction and use the overage to help pay for the detergent.  :)

 Transaction 2:

Arm and Hammer laundry detergent is on sale for $7.74:  Buy one, get 2 free (yes, 2!)
Use 3 $2/2 MQ (manufacture coupons) found in SS (SmartSource) 9.14.14.
Buy 6 and pay $9.48, making each bottle $1.58.
Use the rewards from your first transaction so you don't have to keep track of them!

CVS total:  $ 8.18 for 9 items!

Happy Shopping!
