Extrabucks
CVS prints what they call extrabucks on your receipt after qualifying purchases. These extrabucks can be used on future purchases as cash, and usually expire a month after they are printed. The purchases that qualify for extrabucks are located in the weekly circular ads.
Here is an example of an extrabucks deal:
Buy one Colgate Optic White toothpaste @$2.99, get $2 back in extrabucks rewards.
It's like getting it for $.99!
Use a coupon on top of an extrabucks deal and save even more! This is a great way to make your purchase free or a moneymaker.
The Magical Red Machine
Also known as the extra care center, this nifty box at the front of the store allows you to scan your CVS card and watch store coupons print before your eyes. Some of the offers print for everyone, but it also generates coupons that are personalized to you, based on prior purchases. I've seen coupons for free items print monthly just by shopping at CVS for deals. Here you will get % off one regular priced item coupons as well as bonus extrabucks that are earned every quarter just for shopping at CVS.
Redeeming your Bucks
Tip #1: Use your extrabucks wisely! I sometimes use them immediately afterwards in a second transaction so I don't have to worry about saving them for later. If not, I will save those bucks to use the next time a deal like this comes around, which will be in a week or two. The only time you cannot use extrabucks is to get the same exact deal a second time. So, you cannot buy another Colgate toothpaste using the extrabucks that printed for the first one and expect bucks to print again. Pay attention to the limits listed on each deal in the ad, and at the bottom of your receipt. Extrabucks only print when you scan your CVS card at checkout, and the system keeps track of how many eligible purchases you have left.
Tip #2: Use your extrabucks for items that are a good price or on sale only! It wouldn't make sense to get free toothbrushes and then use those extrabucks on $5 toothpaste.
What to Buy at CVS
I purchase 90% of our toothbrushes and toothpaste from CVS, usually for free, or $.99 a piece. CVS also has good sales on hair care, cereal, vitamins, makeup (I haven't checked out the Beauty Rewards Program yet, but I've heard it saves a great deal of money on beautification products) laundry detergent, and cold/allergy medicine.
